There are 20 families in the raising program. These families are raising 5-10 puppies.
Puppies are placed in home between 8-12 weeks. The puppies remain with the family for 12-14 months. Raisers are responsible for basic obedience, socialization, and house manners. The Raisers are required to attend trainings.
Puppies go with the person every day. The puppies go to Mariners Games, local EMS departments, Sounders games, Everett Mall and other places where there are people and loud noises.
There are three options for a puppy once they go through the training.
- Breeder – only most exceptional puppies are chosen to be breeders.
- Working Guide – learn how to be a guide dog. The puppy goes through intensive obedience, harness work & practice. Most dogs remain a guide dog for 9 years.
- K9 Buddy – puppies who are unable to be a guide dog. These puppies become a K9 buddy to help children gain confidence, learn responsibility.
