Prior to our meeting I sat down with Henri Janiki, Veda, and Indie (see visiting Rotarians and Guests below).  I wanted to apologize to him that I cannot make it to the Rotary After Hours (see announcements below) event at his business, Osprey Logistics, on September 17^th as that is my wife’s and our granddaughter’s birthday. I asked Henri about his business, and it is fascinating what services they provide for marine and trucking, intermodal freight, point to point freight logistics, supply chain logistics, customs clearance, and transport cargo tracking, right here in our own backyard. 

 

President Kari Petrasek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and into our 9^th meeting of the year and our 5,660^th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett.

 

There were 28+/- Rotarians, guests, in attendance.

Several weeks ago, Past President John Olson passed out a survey asking all of us what questions we had about the history of our Rotary Club.  Today John had some answers for us.  He had a two-page paper full of questions and answers and here are three that he highlighted to talk about.

Yes.  Past President Steve Juntwait, Past President Bob Bavasi, Past President Andy Hall.  Non-Alaska fishing trip participants include Past President Henry Newton, Bruce Timm, Rich Toyer, Jerry Tucker, and if Scott Casselman is still a member, he is in there.  Just missing the cut by one year is Past President Greg Tisdal.

We’ve met at Weiser’s Café’, the YMCA, the Monte Cristo Hotel (for 16 years), the Everett Golf and Country Club, The Navy Base, Legion Golf Course, Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s Hensen Hall, American Legion Hall, the Elks Club, the Everett Pacific Hotel, Everett Pacific Shipyards, The Everett Yacht Club, Floral Hall at Forest Park, the Masonic Temple, Past President Neil’s back room, and currently at the Indigo Hotel.  Of note, in 1951, the club changed from meeting on Friday’s to meeting on Tuesday’s.

We had around 254 members in 1990. (This was prior to us helping to form two other clubs in Everett).

 

Henri Janiki introduced his daughter Veda and his “service” dog Indie. Paul Stoot introduced Khara Turner from US Bank. Janice Ellis introduced Morgan Crosby, the leader of Rotaract in our community. See more about Rotaract under announcements.

 

Ashley Bolden announced that there will be a community coffee hour on Wednesday September 9th at Milk House Coffee starting at 8:00 am.  It is located at 4405 Rucker Avenue.

 

Past President Kelli Thode told us that the blood drive held on August 28^th had 22 donors (11 of which had a type “O” blood which is a universal donor type that emergency departments utilize).  This resulted in 24 units of blood being collected that could save up to 72 lives.  The next blood drive will be in October.

 

Morgan Crosby talked about the YES Program (Youth Engaged in Service).

 

Mission: 

To provide leadership development opportunities while engaging youth in service both locally and internationally.

President Kari reminded us about the following dates to celebrate the life of Past President Larry O’Donnell.

Henri Janiki will host a Rotary After Hours event Osprey Logistics on Thursday, September 17^th from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. The address is 2326 27^th Place NE in Everett.  Please see Brain Hollingshead’s email to all of us dated August 27, 2026 to RSVP.  Henri will be using his flat grill to cook Carna Asada, and his mother has volunteered to help.

 

President Kari, in Krissy Davis’s absence, announced that Krissy has a table for the Gift of Life Dinner and Auction benefitting the patients of the Puget Sound Kidney Center that will take place on Saturday September 12^th starting at 5:30 pm at the Tulalip Resort Casino. She is inviting any Rotarian to join her in filling up her table. Past President Kelli presented a District Avenue of Service Award for Youth Services to Janice for her dedication, commitment, and facilitation in providing meaningful life changing experiences for the youth within our service area and within District 5050. Here are samples of what Janice has accomplished:

Kari Quaas gave remembrance dollars for her mother Ellen who passed away 32 years ago, today.

 

Past President Bob was sad that he cannot attend Henri’s Rotary After Hours on September 17^th but he was happy to have looked at Osprey Logistics web site to see the great things they do.

 

Paul Stoot was $100.00 happy to announce Rise Up Academy’s 27^th annual Gala that will be held on November 13^th at the Lynnwood Event Center.  The guest speaker will be The University of Washington President Robert J. Jones.

 

President Elect Anna Marie Laurence gave remembrance dollars for her father, Henry M. Jackson, who passed away 43 years ago today.

 

Past President Michael Kivistad gave happy dollars to have been “selected” for jury duty.  He walked into the Federal Courthouse in Seattle, which he said was a very positive visual experience, and into a courtroom where he was then identified as juror #2.  He was asked what he did for a living, which is a lawyer, and he was immediately excused.

 

Past President Kelli was visiting in Billings (to see her grandchild) and that gave her the opportunity to visit a Rotary Club where she exchanged banners.  The club is very similar to ours in size and age, and as expected they made her very comfortable and welcomed.

 

Janice Ellis was $100.00 happy in honor of Past President Larry O’Donnell who was just one of those few great people that she and we were fortunate enough to have known.

 

Veda gave $10.00 as she was happy to be here enjoying a father/daughter day with her dad Henri.

 

Past President Ed Petersen was $200.00 happy to celebrate his soon to be 58^th wedding anniversary, his soon to be 80^th birthday, Housing Hope’s 39^th year, and for the 10^th anniversary of our club helping to start Rotaract. Ed would like his donation to go to the literacy/book program in the Dominican Republic.

President Kari introduced Raedle Alburn, the Executive Director of the SCHACK art center.
